MIND & BODY, ENERGY & MATTER: All is one in the Eastern model
In the ancient cultures of China and India, the healing arts took a different road than it did in the West. Where we see matter (physical bodies), Eastern physicians see energy.
Fortunately for us, Albert Einstein reconciled these two great systems of medicine when he realized the formula "E=Mc2." Energy and matter are not separate things: they are different aspects of the same vital and amazing life.
In the energy model, disease and dysfunction are the result of disruptions in the flow of energy through the body. These energetic flows can be reached through pressure on and manipulation of the physical body, restoring health and vitality. Another keystone of eastern medicine is the understanding that mind and body are not separate. Thus, treatment of the physical body has effects on the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the self.
Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine teach massage as part of an entire system of medical treatment, which includes the use of herbs, nutrition, spiritual practice and manual therapy. |
