90 MINUTES OF BLISS:
Ancient therapy finds a new home in the West

Thai massage is a 2000-year-old practice with much to offer overworked Westerners.  Known as Nuad Bo'Rarn, or "traditional healing touch," it is part of an entire system of medical treatment, which includes the use of herbs, nutrition, spiritual practice, and massage.

Thai massage is said to have come from India where it was developed by the Buddha's personal physician.  As Buddhism spread to Thailand, so did the medical knowledge.

Over the years the treatments incorporated local herbal knowledge, Ayurvedic medicine, yoga stretches, and understanding of the body's energy systems.

It has been passed down from generation to generation in Buddhist temples, family lineages and texts for more than 2,500 years.

Today there are two main schools of Ancient Massage.  The Northern style, which I practice, places more emphasis on stretching and is considered to be more gentle and relaxing.  It is sometimes called yoga for the lazy!

The treatment consists of rhythmic movement with gentle rocking, deep stretching and compression.  It is performed on a mat on the floor and recipients remain fully clothed.  No oil is used.  Sessions are generally one and 1/2 hours long but may go as long as three hours.

Therapists may use their feet, knees, elbows and forearms in addition to their hands and are trained to work in a state of mindful awareness.

Thai massage relaxes tight muscles, stretches connective tissue, mobilizes joints and improves blood and lymph circulation.

Treatments harmonize the whole body by increasing flexibility, relieving stress, soothing the nervous system, improving posture, releasing energy blocks and improving sleep.

Although deeply relaxing, many people report feeling alert, energetic and joyful after a session.

For my Thai massage, I use a wool mattress pad from Shepherd's Dream in Montague, California.  The comfort of this natural bedding comes from wool's resilient and springy fibers.   Wool bedding is also mildew and dust-mite resistant.
